Privacy Policy for the “Daytape” app#

This privacy policy applies to the “Daytape” app for iPhone (App Store, bundle ID de.pakumedia.daytape). A separate policy applies to our website at https://pakumedia.de/datenschutz.

2. Overview#

Daytape is a private video diary. You record short moments and the app plays them back as the film of your day.

There is no account and no sign-in.
Your recordings stay with you: from version 1.1 in your own Photos library (album “Daytape”), otherwise in the app’s protected area on your device. We do not run a server that videos are uploaded to.
The app contains no ads. From version 1.5 we collect analytics data only with your consent (see section 6).
The app uses no advertising identifier (IDFA) and does no tracking in the sense of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency.
From version 1.6 the app uses your location only if you turn on “Add location automatically” (then in the camera), give one of your places your current location yourself, or, from version 1.7, tap “My Location” in the “Map” tab. From version 1.8 the app sends stored points of your recordings to Apple to get place names, also while “Add location automatically” is off (see section 4, “Location and places”).
The app uses no push service. From version 1.4 it can remind you to record if you allow it; the app plans these reminders itself on your device (local notifications, see section 4).
We do not sell personal data.

Personal data reaches us or our service providers in three cases only: for buying Daytape Pro and checking your entitlement (Apple and our subscription service provider RevenueCat, see section 5), for analytics if you consented (see section 6), and when you write to us yourself. In addition, from version 1.6 the app uses Apple services: place names and map images, from version 1.7 also search results for addresses, from version 1.8 also places near a clip (see section 4, “Location and places”), and the current app version (see below). Apple receives the information needed for this and your IP address; we do not. If you use iCloud Photos or an iCloud backup, Apple transfers your data according to your settings; that is an Apple service we have no influence on and no access to.

Update hint. From version 1.6 the app asks Apple’s public App Store directory at most once a day which version of Daytape is current and tells you when an update is available. Only the app’s identifier and your device’s country are sent; as with any request over the internet, Apple receives your IP address. We do not receive this data.

3. Your recordings#

Where your clips live. From version 1.1 the app saves every new clip to your Photos library, in the album “Daytape”. Daytape itself keeps no second copy, only a reference to the clip: the identifier iOS gives the object in Photos and, if you use iCloud Photos, its iCloud identifier, so the app can find the clip again after you switch devices. The app reads only the clips it created itself from your library, directly through these identifiers. It does not browse your library and sends no photos or videos to us.

From version 1.1 the app records only once you have allowed access to Photos. Clips from version 1.0 stay in the app’s protected area on your device until you move them to Photos from the profile; the same applies for a while to a clip that could not be saved to Photos.

Information in the files. From version 1.8 the app writes information about the recording into the file, like the Camera app: the device model and iOS version, and for photos also the lens, aperture, exposure time, ISO, focal length and time of recording with time zone. It writes no position into the file; only with “Save location in Photos too” does the recording get a location in Photos (see section 4). In Photos the files are named after the time of recording, for example “Daytape_20261007_140311.MOV”. When you share a recording, this information goes with it.

What else the app stores. Which clips belong to which day, their order, favorites and their titles, your name inside the app, your profile picture and thumbnails are stored locally on the device.

Legal basis: the processing happens on your device and in your own Photos library only; we have no access to it.
Backup: clips in Photos are backed up by your photo service, for example iCloud Photos if you turned it on. Apple’s terms apply; Daytape itself uploads no clips. From version 1.1 the app’s small database (days, order, references, favorites, titles, name, from version 1.6 also places and positions) and the profile picture are part of your device backup (iCloud backup or a backup on your computer), so your days come back after a restore. Videos in the app’s storage, rendered films and the stored purchase state are excluded from the backup.
Retention and deletion: as long as you want. When you delete a clip or a day in Daytape, the app also removes the clip from Photos; iOS asks you in its own dialog. Deleted objects then stay in “Recently Deleted” in Photos for up to 30 days. If you delete the app, your clips in Photos remain; clips in the app’s storage are deleted with the app.
Export and sharing: when you export a film, the app saves it to your Photos library. When you share a clip, you choose the recipient in the iOS share sheet. From then on the settings and terms of that service apply.

4. Permissions#

Location (from version 1.6)	Places on your recordings and the map, only while you use the app, never in the background. What goes to Apple is explained below under “Location and places”. You can turn it off in the app (Profile → Settings → “Add location automatically”) and in iOS Settings.
Notifications (from version 1.4)	Reminders, if you allow them: at most one a day, for example when you have not recorded anything by the afternoon. The app plans them on your device; there is no push service and no server for them. So that the time and wording fit, the app keeps, on the device, when you usually record and which reminders you reacted to. If you consented to analytics (section 6), we also record whether reminders are on, how you answer the question about reminders, which settings you change and which kind of reminder you open. You can turn them off in the app (Profile → Settings → Reminders) and in iOS Settings.

You can withdraw any permission in the iOS settings. Without camera access, recording is not possible; without the microphone the app records without sound. The app asks for Photos access only right before your first recording.

Location and places. The app stores positions and places only on your device. We do not receive your location, not in analytics either. For place names, maps and search the app uses Apple services. Apple receives the information named below and, as with any request over the internet, your IP address, never the picture, sound or text of your recordings.

“Add location automatically” (from version 1.6, off by default): only with this switch does a new recording get a position, only while you use the app, never in the background. Up to version 1.7 the app takes your position once when you record. From version 1.8 it follows your position while the camera is open, so the recording has an accurate position right away; only one position per recording is stored. If it lies within one of your places (“My Places”), the app adds that place’s name without internet, otherwise a name from Apple.
Points you set yourself (from version 1.8): under “Add location” or “Change location” you can set or move a clip’s point yourself, for example with “Choose on map”, a place from “Nearby”, a suggestion or one of your places, also without “Add location automatically”. If you move or remove the position of a recording, the app keeps the original one on your device so you can go back with “Original location”.
Names from Apple (from version 1.7): for every clip with a point the app asks Apple once for the names of that spot (country, region, city, district, water, areas such as a park) and sends the coordinates and the app language for this. It stores the names only on your device with the clip, for the place name, the map and search. From version 1.8 this also happens while “Add location automatically” is off: for points you set yourself and for existing points of earlier recordings, for example after the update to 1.8 and after you change the app language, only while the app is open. If a clip within 100 m already has names, the app takes them over without asking Apple. When you choose a spot on the map or the centre of one of your places, the app shows Apple’s name for it right away. For a clip without a point nothing goes to Apple. In version 1.6 the app asks only for the city and district, and only for positions outside your places.
“Nearby” (from version 1.8): when you open a clip with a point or its “…” menu, the app asks Apple’s map service for places near that point and sends its coordinates for this, also while “Add location automatically” is off. Only a place you choose from the answer is stored.
My Places (from version 1.6): your places (name, centre, radius) are stored only on your device. If you tap “Use current location” for a place, the app takes your position once as its centre. “New place” and “Edit location” show an Apple map with the place, its radius and the spots of your recordings. In versions 1.6 and 1.7 the app asks now and then whether an automatically added place is right, and remembers a place you give a clip with a position yourself in “My Places”; your answers and these places stay on your device. From version 1.8 the app no longer learns anything on its own.
Maps (from version 1.6): for map images, for example in the “Map” tab (from version 1.7, Standard, Satellite or Hybrid), the app sends only the map area to Apple. Your places, previews, names and the spots of your recordings are drawn only on your device. If you tap “My Location” in the “Map” tab, iOS asks the first time for permission “While Using the App”; the app then shows your position only in the map and does not store it. The app remembers the map style only on your device.
Search (from version 1.7): if you search for an address or a place, in the “Map” tab, for your places or, from version 1.8, for a clip’s location, the app sends the text you type (already while you type, for suggestions) and the map area or the surroundings of the point to Apple. It searches your own places and the place names of your clips only on the device.
Location in Photos (from version 1.7): with “Save location in Photos too” (off by default) a new recording gets its position when it is saved to Photos. Photos then shows it on its map, and anyone you share it with from Photos receives the location too. If you later move or remove the point in Daytape, nothing changes in Photos; you change the location there in Photos itself.
Backup during the update (version 1.8): before the app switches its database to the new way of handling places, it makes one backup of your previous place data (your places, the place names and positions of your clips) so nothing is lost in the update. The backup stays on your device and is deleted after 30 days.

5. Buying Daytape Pro#

Purchases run through the App Store. Apple processes the payment data; we receive neither payment data nor contact details from Apple.

To handle purchases, restore them and check your Pro entitlement, we use RevenueCat, Inc., 1032 E Brandon Blvd #3003, Brandon, FL 33511, USA, as our processor. For this the app sends RevenueCat:

a randomly generated pseudonymous identifier (App User ID),
the identifier iOS assigns to apps from the same vendor (identifierForVendor, IDFV); it is the same for all PAKU Media apps on your device,
the purchase receipt from Apple,
technical details: country, language, app and iOS version, and device type,
as with any internet connection, your IP address.

We send no name, no email address and no account data, because the app has no account.

Purpose: app functionality: buying Daytape Pro, restoring purchases on a new device and checking whether a valid Pro entitlement exists.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR for buying and restoring (performance of the Daytape Pro contract). Checking the entitlement while you have not bought anything is based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; our legitimate interest is that the app, which has no account, reliably knows whether Pro is unlocked.
Storage location and transfer to a third country: RevenueCat stores the data in the USA on Amazon Web Services. This transfer is not covered by an adequacy decision, because RevenueCat is not certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. It is based on the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses (Module 2, Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR) in RevenueCat’s data processing agreement (https://www.revenuecat.com/dpa). We send you a copy on request.
Retention: 24 months after your subscription ends or after your last purchase.

Without a purchase, data is sent to RevenueCat only to check whether a Pro entitlement exists. RevenueCat receives no analytics data and no analytics ID, and passes nothing on to our analytics service.

RevenueCat is bound by an agreement under Art. 28 GDPR to protect your data at least as well as this privacy policy describes and the GDPR requires.

With your consent we use the PostHog service to understand how Daytape is used, in order to improve the app. The app asks you before it sends anything. You can change your choice at any time under Profile → Settings → Share Analytics. Without your consent no analytics data is collected.

Data: usage events (for example screens opened, onboarding steps, answers to permission prompts, features and settings used, when and how you record: hour, length, format, capture mode, frame rate, camera and zoom; day film loading times, reminders opened, purchases and whether you have Pro), error reports (error text and place in the program code, without file paths), device and app information (device type, screen size, iOS and app version, language and region, time zone) and a random analytics ID. Your videos, photos, titles and other texts, names and location are not collected. Like any internet connection, your IP address is transmitted, but it is not stored and not used to determine a location.
Before you answer: what you do in the app before you answer (for example in the introduction) is kept only in the app’s memory. It is sent only after “Allow”; after “Don’t Allow”, or when the app is closed, it is discarded.
Purpose: improving the app. No advertising, no sale, no passing on to third parties.
Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, Section 25(1) TDDDG). You can withdraw it at any time with effect for the future.
Recipient: PostHog Inc., San Francisco, USA, as our processor. The data is stored in the EU (Frankfurt am Main). PostHog Inc. is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (adequacy decision of the European Commission); the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses also apply (Art. 46(2)(c) GDPR). Retention: 12 months.
Withdrawal: if you turn off “Share Analytics”, the app sends nothing more, discards data not yet sent and creates a new analytics ID. Data already sent is deleted when the retention period ends.

7. Contacting us by email#

If you write to us, we process your email address and the content of your message in order to reply (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, legitimate interest in answering). We delete the message once it is no longer needed, at the latest after three years.

Our mailboxes are run by Google Workspace as our processor (contracting party Google Cloud EMEA Limited, Dublin). Google also processes emails in the USA; Google LLC is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework (adequacy decision of the European Commission).

8. Your rights#

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. Because the app keeps no account and your recordings live only on your device and in your own Photos library, these rights mainly concern purchase data, analytics data and email correspondence. Analytics data only carries a random ID and no name, so as a rule we cannot match it to a person (Art. 11 GDPR). Contact hello@pakumedia.de.

You may also lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority, for example the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

9. Children#

Daytape is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you are under 16, please ask your parents before you consent to analytics (section 6).

10. Changes#

We update this policy when the app changes. The current version is always at https://pakumedia.de/pakustudios/daytape/privacy.
